Advent: Jesus, Our King

Is your view of Jesus complete?

  • 6 For a child will be born for us, a son will be given to us, and the government will be on his shoulders. He will be named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. 7 The dominion will be vast, and its prosperity will never end. He will reign on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish and sustain it with justice and righteousness from now on and forever. The zeal of the Lord of Armies will accomplish this. (Isaiah 9:6-7)
  •  1After Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of King Herod, wise men from the east arrived in Jerusalem, 2 saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star at its rising and have come to worship him.” (Matthew 2:1-2)
  • Who’s Your Jesus?
    1. The baby in the manger: “This will be the sign for you: You will find a baby wrapped tightly in cloth and lying in a manger.”Luke 2:12
    2. The wise teacher: When he saw the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. 2 Then he began to teach them…Matthew 5:1-2
    3. The miracle worker: Now Jesus began to go all over Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people.Matthew 4:23
    4. The Savior on the cross: He himself is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours, but also for those of the whole world.1 John 2:2
    5. The King of Kings: For this reason God highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow — in heaven and on earth and under the earth —11 and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is LordPhilippians 2:9-11
  • And he has a name written on his robe and on his thigh: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS. (Revelation 19:16)

Advent: Jesus, Our Priest

Jesus is our great high priest; once and for all.

  • 14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens — Jesus the Son of God — let us hold fast to our confession. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in every way as we are, yet without sin. 16 Therefore, let us approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in time of need. (Hebrews 4:14-16)
  • Three functions of a Priest:
    • Represents the people before God: For every high priest taken from among men is appointed in matters pertaining to God… (Hebrews 5:1a)
    • Makes sacrifices for sins: God for the people, to offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins. 2 He is able to deal gently with those who are ignorant and are going astray, since he is also clothed with weakness. (Hebrews 5:1b-2)
    • Was a shadow of things to come
: So the previous command is annulled because it was weak and unprofitable 19 (for the law perfected nothing), but a better hope is introduced, through which we draw near to God. (Hebrews 7:18-19)
  • Christmas reminds us that Jesus…
    • Lived like us: For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in every way as we are, yet without sin. (Hebrews 4:15)
    • Died for us
: For this is the kind of high priest we need: holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens. 27 He doesn’t need to offer sacrifices every day, as high priests do — first for their own sins, then for those of the people. He did this once for all time when he offered himself. (Hebrews 7:26-27)
    • Intercedes for us
: Who is the one who condemns? Christ Jesus is the one who died, but even more, has been raised; he also is at the right hand of God and intercedes for us. (Romans 8:34)

Advent: Jesus, Our Prophet

Jesus calls himself a prophet. What else does he say about himself?

  • 1Long ago God spoke to the fathers by the prophets at different times and in different ways. 2 In these last days, he has spoken to us by his Son. God has appointed him heir of all things and made the universe through him. 3 The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact expression of his nature, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high. 4 So he became superior to the angels, just as the name he inherited is more excellent than theirs. (Hebrews 1:1-4)
  • Prophet – one who, moved by the Spirit of God and hence, his organ or spokesman, solemnly declares to men what he has received by inspiration, especially future events, and in particular such as relate to the cause and kingdom of God and to human salvation. (Strong’s Dictionary)
  • 22 Moses said: The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your brothers and sisters. You must listen to everything he tells you. 23 And everyone who does not listen to that prophet will be completely cut off from the people. (Acts 3:22-23)
  • Jesus called himself a prophet.
    • Luke 13:33  “Yet it is necessary that I travel today, tomorrow, and the next day, because it is not possible for a prophet to perish outside of Jerusalem.”
    • Matthew 13:57 … Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and in his household.”
  • Jesus is the true and better Moses who stands in the gap between the people and the Lord and who mediates a new covenant.
